The Noor Orphans Fund Swimathon 2006 Update |
|
The Noor Orphans Fund is a UK registered charity organisation whose main role is to provide financial support and assistance to orphans in Iraq. At present, approximately 1,700 orphans in Iraq are receiving monthly support from the Noor Orphans Fund. The Orphans Fund also runs a sponsorship scheme whereby a person can sign up to sponsor an orphan in Iraq for just £10 per month. When an orphan is sponsored, the sponsor will receive a profile and photograph of the orphan they are sponsoring. The sponsor is also able to correspond with the orphan by sending letters and cards. The sponsor will also be able to send gifts for special occasions such as Eid or birthdays to the orphan. In order to raise more money to help the increasing impoverished orphans in Iraq, it was decided to hold an event to raise more donations. The event that was decided on was a swimathon challenge, whereby 2 swimmers will attempt to swim 3,000 metres without stopping. In return we asked for people to sponsor the swimmers for the completion of this challenge. All sponsorships and donations made would go directly to the orphans in Iraq and help sponsor more orphans and their families who are in desperate need of support.
On Saturday 9th December 2006, the Noor Orphans Fund Swimathon event was held at Harrow Leisure Centre. Both swimming pools were hired out from 6.00pm to 10.00pm and open to the brothers for general swimming with the exception of 2 lanes, which were reserved for the Swimathon challenge. 2 sessions of general swimming were held for the brothers (6.00pm to 8.00pm and 8.00pm to 10.00pm).
Ahmed Al-Jobouri and Haider Twaij started the 3,000 metre non-stop swim together at 7.00pm. throughout the swim, they were almost neck and neck, with occasions of overtaking each other. In order to maintain the non-stop swim, they both used a combination of front crawl and breast stroke. Ahmed was using a 10-5 routine of swimming 10 length front crawl followed by 5 lengths breast stroke, whereas Haider was using a 1-1 routine of 1 length front crawl followed by 1 length breast stroke. After exactly an hour and a half of non-stop swimming, both swimmers completed the 3,000 metres and finished together. They both averaged 1 minute per length (33.33 metres), which is 30 minutes to swim 1km.
So far, £1,748.50 has been raised from donations and sponsorships. With this money, 7 new orphans and their families can be sponsored for 2 years, meaning that the lives of 7 impoverished families greatly improved!
