Young Muslims from across the UK collect charity for Iraqi orphans |
|
Saturday 9th February 2008
Over two hundred youths will take part in an all day London wide collection to raise money for Iraqi children affected by the war. The youngsters who come from across the UK are giving up their Saturday to collect at various tube and train stations.
The money raised will go towards sponsoring around three hundred Iraqi orphans in Sadr City, one of the poorest parts of Baghdad. This project has been jointly organised by the charities: The Council of European Jamaats, The World Federation of KSMIC and the Student Iraqi Medical Association. For just £30 a month a young orphan can be provided with primary school education, books, healthcare and shelter. The aim is to provide access to basic necessities for children, but in a way in which they can remain with their families.
Munawar Rattansey, President of The Council of European Jamaats said: "This project has been enthusiastically led by the young people themselves and I am very proud of the way in which they have dedicated themselves to this very worthy cause. It is pleasing to see young people holding such a strong sense of social responsibility and giving up their time in order to help those who are suffering in Iraq."
Fatima Manji, a participant from Peterborough said "Too often we become too caught up in the politics of war and forget that there are innocent victims: children in desperate need of our help. This is a great opportunity for young people to come together and do something for those who are less fortunate than ourselves."
