The following is the article from the Peterborough Evening Telegraph: Youngsters collect for Iraq Orphans YOUNG Muslims from Peterborough took part in a London-wide collection to raise money for Iraqi children affected by the war.
They joined youngsters from across the UK. giving up their Saturday to collect at various tube and train stations, and managed to raise a grand total of £14,520.
The money will go towards sponsoring about 300 Iraqi orphans in Sadr City, one of the poorest parts of Baghdad.
This project was jointly organised by charities, the Council of European Jamaats, the World Federation of KSIMC and the Student Iraqi Medical Association.
For £30 a month, a young orphan can be provided with primary school education, books, healthcare and shelter.
The aim is to provide access to basic necessities for children.
President of the Council of European Jamaats Munawar Rattansey, said: "This project was enthusiastically led by the young people themselves, and I am very proud of the way in which they dedicated themselves to this very worthy cause.
Fatima Manji, one of the Peterborough organisers, said: "Too often, we become too caught up in the politics of war and forget that there are innocent victims, children in desparate need of our help." |
