| visit www.myh.org.uk | In the wake of 21st century the Muslim world has been devastated by tsunami, earthquake, famine, flood and war. When we switch on the TV we see the sufferings of our fellow Muslims in Iraq, Sudan and many other countries. It is very painful to see them suffer and feel the frustration of being so helpless. Whilst there are millions affected around the world, there are a countless number of young Muslims in Britain who are suffering in silence. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said: “The Muslim Ummah is like one body. If the eye is in pain then the whole body is in pain and if the head is in pain then the whole body is in pain”
Muslim Youth Helpline receives about 2,000 calls a month. The suffering of young Muslims goes unnoticed by the majority of the Muslims in UK as clients have no one to turn to, no one to talk to and no one to cry to. These young people are the victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, poverty and neglect. As a community we prefer to sweep such issues under the carpet rather than deal with them.
This has led to young Muslims feeling suicidal, lack of self worth and low confidence. Many of them blame themselves for the abuse they experience and often self harm and suffer severe mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
Although we receive over 2000 calls a month we are only able to deal with 30% of our calls. This is due to the lack of phone lines and supporting infrastructure that we are able to afford. Even though we have been very successful in helping young people and have become nationally and internationally recognised, we have no core funding. We are completely dependant on you and charitable trusts.
To raise money for our activities and improve the infrastructure of the organisation in order to reach out to all the British Muslim youth in desperate need of our support, we are holding this fundraising event. It is going to be a fun packed event, including a debate entitled “Does multiculturalism encourage separateness” followed by a 3 course meal. The panellists for the debate will include Trevor Phillips (CEHR) who recently challenged the ideals of multiculturalism and sparked off a heated debate on Britishness and its core values; Sadiq Khan (MP); Salma Yaqoob (vice chair of Respect) and the debate will be chaired by Mehdi Hassan.
Your £40 can:
- Support 10 Befriending sessions
- Cover the cost of nearly 20 young people contacting us via free phone number, receiving one hour of support
- Cover the cost of nearly 100 young Muslims in prison contacting us for support via freepost envelope
- Reach out to more young people through publicity
In return you will get:
- A stimulating debate
- A delicious 3 course meal sponsored and catered by Sapna
- A chance to see what MYH does and how we offer support
The event has kindly been sponsored by Q News, Islamic Times, Muslim News, Emel and HSBC |
