Day 3 - Mentors Diary E-mail

9th August 2006 Abisali Ebrahim

After the nightly meeting, I thought that waking the campers up for morning prayers would be a nightmare. However, the joy of seeing the campers waking up is one of the many reasons why Sweden is a rewarding experience. Morning prayers with the campers show the unity of the camp. After waking the campers again up at 8:20 and heading of the breakfast, campers again are eating in harmony and then the campers are off to there various lessons. Lessons are complete are 12:50 with zuhur and asr namaaz. After namaaz, testing the campers on their salaat and whudu the campers participate in sports. To see the campers conquer there fears in the low rope assault course or watching them play beach volleyball, something that some of campers have not done before, is an honour. After a half an hour wash up, jamaat namaaz (something that is emphasised in the camp) takes place. After namaaz activities with everyone in the camp (Personal Development Time) and Planet Time (with individuals planet) makes campers friendships grow. The campers go to sleep ahead of another exciting day.

Writing this diary in the dead of the night (as night guard) means keeping the whole camp safe from any potential dangers that may occur in the night, and staying awake to ensure campers sleep peacefully. This also means that there is plenty of time to think. So far into this camp the sense of responsibility that I have been given has been very enjoyable. Hearing the campers respect of “Abis Bha” and to my shock, “Abis Uncle” makes mentoring in Sweden something that I will love to do again. To see them conquer there fears in the low rope assault course or watching them play beach volleyball, something that some of campers have not done before is an honour. I am extremely tired, however I know I am doing it for Allah (swt).
