Sweden 2007 - Concepts

The Administrators view personal development of each and every participant as being of paramount importance.  It works through shared experiences and mutual co-operation between all involved: Admin, Lectures, Campers and Mentors. However, the focus is mainly on the campers – the primary beneficiaries of the camp. All camp activities, from sports, lessons to lunch time are geared specifically to continually enhance their personal development. Indeed, campers are seen as individuals, and thus Mentors, Administrators and Lecturers spend time individually with campers, in order to bring the best out of all of them.

What does the Sweden Camp aim to develop?

It aims to develop the camper’s personal character. Often in group activities the needs of the camper are overlooked, but at the Sweden camp, because of the expertise available and the experience from all CoEJ camps, the needs of all tend to be met.
Communication skills. This includes written, body language but also verbal. The camp, through its structured timetable, allows for campers to be exposed to a great number of other campers, to work within teams with achievable goals, and to work with Mentors throughout the camp. Parents will witness an increase in the camper’s individual confidence, and thus as a result more effective articulation.
Ibadaat. The camp has a underlying religious philosophy which is demonstrated through the Namaz programmes, Khushali / Wafaat Programmes, Jum’ah prayers, Khutbas, through the lessons and from planet times with mentors.
The camp has a group of core values. This includes honesty, integrity, tolerance, patience, kindness, humbleness, time management, task focus, collective responsibility, leadership and sportsmanship. The camp’s timetable is designed, armed with the benefit of hindsight to bring these values out during the camp.

How does the Camp implement this Philosophy?

Use of small classes size, to increase the teacher-student ratio. Each camper can thus gain more time with the teacher, greater attention and thus a better opportunity to develop.
Each camper has two personal mentors. They are responsible for his well being and his development throughout the camp: from arrival in Sweden, all the way back to Stanmore.
Sports is coached by the mentors and it allows for all the campers to play new sports and the develop and enhance their skills at the ones they have already taken part in.
Specifically encouraging the trial of new sports, such as canoeing.
Using lateral thinking exercises, to heighten the camper’s mental activity. The aim of these quizzes, delivered during the Personal Development Time in the evenings, is to encourage campers to ‘think outside the box’ and to arrive at solutions efficiently.
Appreciation of advantages of team work in activities, sports, intellectual discourses, and communal advancement.

This importance on personal development is only the first step to ensuring that the camper reaches his potential after the Camp, and establishes himself as a servant of our community.
