Murtaza Merali was born in Mombasa, Kenya in 1983. He emigrated to London, UK in 1990. He comes from a family of three; an elder sister who is married, and a younger brother just starting his A-levels. His mother and father from Bujumbura and Lamu respectively.
Murtaza completed his GCSEs at Northwood School, his A Levels at Rickmansworth Sixth Form and his Islamic studies at Hujjat Saturday Workshop, Stanmore. He recently (2006) completed his degree course at Aston University and graduated in Business Computing & IT degree. During his industrial placement year, he worked for as a Deskside Analyst. He has taken part in both team and individual sports such as football, badminton, squash and cricket at school and university. He was the captain for his High school cricket team where his team won three out of the five district tournaments. He is currently a member of the Stanmore Jaffery cricket team and has represented them at an International Sports festival held in Kenya in 2003. He has a keen interest in learning about different people and cultures and has travelled extensively within the East African, Middle East and North American regions. He has played an active role in the community in various activities including helping out in the kitchen for several years. Now that Murtaza has completed his degree, he intends to increase his participation in communal activities such as this Sweden Camp. |
