Born in Mombasa, Kenya in 1949, Ashakhussein is the last born in a family of 4. He has an elder brother and 2 elder sisters. His mother Mariambai was originally from Bukoba and his father Mohamedali was born in Mumbai.
Ashakhussein completed his O level at Allidina Visram School in Mombasa, after which he attained a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at The Mombasa Technical Institute. He went on to work for Asia Motors and then joined his brother in business, dealing in various items including electrical goods. Now a sleeping and retired partner in industries operating in Kenya and Karachi (Pakistan), Ashakhussein was also a partner in M.S. Bawazir & Co., which later established various industries in Kenya, which are still running.
Ashakhussein has served in the management committee of the KSI Jamat of Mombasa and was appointed counsellor to the Africa Federation before migrating to Nairobi in 1986. Here he was elected as vice president of The Shia Ithna-asheri Jamat of Nairobi. In the same year, he was also elected Executive Councillor of The World Federation. He still holds this position within the World Federation representing the Birmingham Jamat.
Ashakhussein went on to be elected the president of The Jamat in Nairobi in 1987 and held this position till he migrated to Birmingham in 1993. During his term as president of Nairobi Jamat, he was involved in the rescue operation in Somalia and received the Huseini Medal in recognition of this from The Africa Federation. As appointed chairman of the Setwell Board, Ashakhussein helped settle our brothers from Somalia in various countries
Whilst in Nairobi, Ashakhussein was also the chairman of Nairobi Jaffery Sports Club from 1986 to 1989. He played a key part in acquiring the land in the Lavington area of Nairobi from the government in 1986 on which he helped start a project to build a mosque, imambargha, school and sports club on a single site. He has also served as treasurer of the Kenya Cricket Association.
Since his arrival in Birmingham in 1993, Ashakhussein has been keen in working for the Birmingham Jamat, starting in the building committee and the Executive Committee in 2002.
Ashakhussein is currently the Vice President of The Birmingham Jamat. He is also Executive Councellor of COEJ, the chairman of The Education Board and the co-ordinator of the Senior Network Desk.
Ashakhussein is passionate about education and intends to continue promoting this within our communities.
