Day 8 - Mentor Diary E-mail
Sunday, 30 July 2006
As I sit here at 1:45 in the morning on night watch duty I shall ponder over the last week that I have been in Sweden and share some feelings that I have had. Not that the sleep depravation has kicked it is harder than ever trying to stay awake.

The past week has been a long and windy road. I have faced many challenges and more importantly over come these. The time spent here has been enjoyable but yet tiring, challenging but satisfying. I have leant a lot about my self and what I am capable of.

Today I took the four classes for a lesson and taught them about the Importance of Education and what Peer Pressure to expect and how to deal with them. From this I learnt that it very difficult to use the same material for each of the different age group. I also found out that it is more difficult to teach then I had first anticipated. From this experience I feel that I am able to teach more often and at the same time have a good impact upon the children.

Also as my role is sports co-ordinator I have had a busy day as I had to ensure that all the sports are organised and that enough mentors and admin are around to supervise them. With the inter-planet tournaments running there has been more to organise and making sure that the campers are happy with the way they are running and fairly. After the running around I was able to continue my session of swimming and relax for 20 minutes before I had to start running around after campers ensuring that they all manage to get freshened up for dinner.

The mentoring part of the role has allowed me to increasingly grow as a person and every hour I am faced with a new problem or challenge and guiding the campers to a suitable result. I have realised that it was not as daunting as I had originally anticipated but the amount of work that needs to be done was not been estimated correctly.

I feel that I will be able to walk away from this camp as a stronger leader, more confident speaker, an efficient organiser and more mature. I am grateful for this opportunity to be able to be a mentor and aid the campers in the way I do. I feel that I have made a strong bond with the campers and have learnt from them.
