The camp is organised as an analogy to the solar system. The Administration form the Sun, around whom the camp revolves. The Sun is responsible for the well-being of all participants, from the cooks to the campers. As one camper famously described them: ‘the Sun shines on us all.’
The mentors may be considered as the moons, leaders of the individual planets. The campers are the planets: one may argue they are the reason for the existence of the moons and the Sun.
The Philosophy of naming the groups ‘planets’ is to encourage the campers to adopt the purposes that Planets have. This may seem strange at first, but remember all Planets submit themselves to Allah (swt), they all have a purpose and in fact they all work in harmony.
The campers are divided up into four groups of 8 campers each. Each group is named after one planet. Each planet has two mentors. The make-up of each planet is carefully chosen in order to allow for a variety in age, and locations (Jamaats;) with the primary purpose of encouraging a bond across age and across different locations.
Each planet shares two bedrooms, either side of the Mentors’ bedroom. The rooms are decided based on age, in order to minimise the possibility of different sleep patterns. The planets compete against each other in sports, activities and in quizzes. |
