Mentor Training Weekend Day 2 E-mail
Friday, 07 July 2006

The day started in the early hours where mentors were just chilling, talking and getting to know one another. It was a sort of bonding time in which allowed the atmosphere to calm as well as the nerves of the mentors.

An 8am wake up call with Ali standing over me was not what I wanted but It was what I got. The solution was to roll over and lie in for another hour.

There seemed a buzz around the breakfast table and a rush for the shower as there was a 10:1 person to shower ratio. A rather hectic morning but everyone was set for the 10am start.

The Ethos of the camp was discussed and expectations were discovered. The main areas were discussed and key words, distinguished. Amongst these were emphasis, energise and empathise, Amplitude, aptitude and attitude and passion and compassion.

Other discussions included the arrival of campers and how to respond to different situations, for example, different reactions for different stereotypes. The mentor manual is our guidelines for the camp. It was analysed and feedback was given. The way mentors are required to act were becoming much clearer and I found I was gaining a better understanding into my role.

Salaah was performed and the rules regarding the performing jamaat namaaz was the topic between Zohr and Asr. Lunch followed Salaah which again did not disappoint. In Sweden, namaaz will be assessed so we were assessed as well on how to pray and perfom salaah to the top level. Trust exercises were incorporated into the day and it built confidence within the mentors.

Finally we were allowed freedom to kick a ball around except Shabir fell like an Italian at the world cup within 2 minutes of play which lead on to the topic of first aid. i.e. how to react in certainsituations and to certain injuries. Eventually our football break came and it allowed us to relax to a certain extent but also get the blood flowing.

Alhamdullilah dinner was served promptly and efficiently which allowed us to press on onto other matters. The medical details of campers were discussed so we would be aware of certain dangers for certain campers. Also we had a chance to act out a PDT session and again just unwind a little but also work as a mentor; for example facilitating answers instead of telling,

Dessert was served and salaah was performed once again. Finally a small discussion on planets and timings to wrap up the day.
