Muslim Community Meeting with the Mayor
A meeting was held at the City Hall to discuss various issues:
  1. Anti –Terror legislation is now being discussed at House of Lords. Government is also trying the 90 day detention through the European Parliament. It is in everybody’s interest to be vigilant and set up protests against its approval at the European level. Other parts of the legislation are also going to effect Muslims and the lobbying process has been on going.
  2. Olympics – Effect of Olympics in the local area, London and the country in general was discussed. Mayor’s Office is in the process of setting up infrastructures to monitor effect on employment of ethnic minorities and Muslims in particular. Specialists from Atlanta, Georgia who were involved with minority groups are to be invited in getting out the maximum advantage from the event and also long term prospects after the event. Certain percentage of contracts given out to have ethnic bias and the Mayor’s Office also to monitor job prospects for ethnic minority on contracts given out to large organisations. All of these to be set up from Summer 2006.
  3. It was decided that there was a need to form a lobby group to pressure the government to rescind or renegotiate the extradition treaty with USA which is distorted. The issue of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with authoritarian, brutal regimes to be highlighted at every occasion possible.
  4. A representative from Unison was also present – wanting more Muslim participation within the union movement.

The meeting ended with Mayor promising to meet, on a regular basis, with the Muslim leaders.
