COEJ was invited to meet the senior members of the Iranian delegation at the residence of the Iranian Ambassador.
Munawer Rattansey, President of Coej together with MCB representatives led by Sir Iqbal Sacrani met: Mr Alauddin Boroujerdi- PM Chairman of the Foreign Policy Commission at Islamic Majles Mr Javed Ansari- 1st Counsellor Mr Akbar A'lami- MP Mr A. Ashouri- MP, Vice Speaker of Majles Mr Hossein Ayyari- MP, Secretary of Commission Mr Vahid Ahmadi- Director General for Cultural Affairs in Foreign Ministry The issues disscussed were: The Nuclear Programme The delegation discussed the current crisis over Iran’s nuclear programme which Mr Brougerdi insisted was entirely peaceful and which they were fully entitled to pursue according to the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The programme, he explained, went back to the 1970s when both the British and American government had helped set it up. The Iranian nuclear programme, which has been undertaken for a number of years now, was purely for energy sources and harboured no malign intent. Communication The Iranian delegation to communicate and inform Muslim organisations in Britain of their position on varrious issues to counteract any mis-information from the media. The position of Muslims post 9/11 and 7/7 The delegation was informed of the steps taken by the British Muslim communities such as: - centres opened up to neighbours
- contact with interfaith communities and politicans to explain the peaceful message of Islam and revulsion to violence.
