The Bi-annular Council of European Jamaats Meeting on 20 November 2005 at Peterborough E-mail

MEETING COMMENCED AT 11:01 am

Meeting commenced with introduction of all the members.

Minutes of the last AGM:

Minutes were found to be unclear, erroneous and incomprehensible in some places. It was decided that these minutes will be represented in a corrected form at the next Council Meeting.

SECRETARY GENERAL’S REPORT:

  • Sec Gen was concerned about the frequent re-location of the office without proper Council consultation.
  • The need for Constitution to be updated to bring in line with current needs.
  • Secretariat was functioning well and all Boards were beginning to use the services. European Haj Mission had also agreed to come on board from next season onwards.
  • Concerned about lack of co-operation from jamaats in forming a database.
  • Change internal workings of EC Meetings whereby 2 Heads of Board are invited to update OB’s rather then having to wait 6 months for the Council Meeting.
  • In conclusion- the need for support and co-operation was emphasised for FAITH COMMUNITIES CAPACITY BUILDING FUND. This is a Government sponsored fund aimed mainly towards the Muslim Community.
    Dr Akber pointed out that each organisation can only make 1 application. WF and WF.

    Resolution of Council meeting of Feb 6 05-channelling of non-khums huqooq funds through London Mayor’s Office. New association with South London Citizens.
    In conclusion, strong support sought from all, for CoEJ to move towards Federating.

After various discussions and clarification of the resolution, Birmingham, Leicester, Leeds, Essex, and Hyderi have decided to implement immediately. Other Jamaats- Peterborough, Wessex, Marsta, Trollhattan will decide after consultation with their committees.
Kassimbhai requested a letter from

Razahussein Rahim presented his report with the following:

  • Aalim/Zaakir directory being updated by Secretariat.
  • Distributed copies of Powerpoint Presentation of various Duas.
  • Emphasised the need to continue to support the Behlool Conference.
  • Need for other Jamaats to have open days with other faiths taking the lead from Peterborough Jamaat.
  • Have representation at IEB. – President pointed that the Secretariat should be informed of any representation at WF.
  • Khums Calculator- WF to continue to work on the Electronic format and

    • Roshanbhai Versi presented the report that was prepared by Bashirbhai Rattansey.
    • Rafiqbhai Hemraj enquired about the subsidy available for the Seniors on their Arabic Learning programme in Damascus.
      President suggested to present the costing of the trip.
      Dr Akber raised concern that the Seniors were still using the COSHISHCO Letterhead rather than the

      Fatemabai Dossa, the incoming Chair of YND presented the following:

      • Lack of basic infrastructure.
      • Individual youth bodies are not contacting YND.
      • There is a need to address the lack of communication within Khoja Youths.
      • To have quarterly meetings to improve communication.
      • Future plans include the issuing of a newsletter.
      • To work on Capacity Building- leadership course.- public speaking

        • Sarfrazbhai Mavani presented the Sports Report by informing on the proposal for MAMT 2006 by Hujjat. The anticipated cost is £14000 (excluding catering). Husseinbhai Jiwa suggested Peterborough venue but to be managed by Hujjat –a much cheaper option.

        • Dr Akber explained the process of application for Faith Funding and the deadline of 2 Dec (CoEJ deadline being 26 November 2005).
        • Anverbhai Dhanji formalised the re-location of the Council Office to Hyderi.
        • Hilal Committee. After much discussion and various views it was decided that CoEJ will nominate 2-3 competent candidates to sit with WF on their Hilal Committee. Kassimbhai Manji suggested one of the candidates to be Maulana Kalbe Abbas. The need for unity was emphasised time and time again.
        • Nazirbhai Jessa, Chairman of Watford Electronics, has been nominated as the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, UK for the year 2008 by the Queen.
        • Saghirbhai Shah expressed his thanks to the President and the Secretariat.
        • President expressed his thanks to Peterborough Jamaat for hosting the conference and in particular the two dedicated volunteers – Yusufbhai Bandali and Shaukatbhai Bhalwani always there to fill up the cuppa with a smile!
        • Mohammedbhai Bharwani offered Birmingham as the venue for the Next Council Meeting.
        • Meeting concluded with a dua from Mulla Roshanbhai Versi.
