Muharram 1429: Wessex Jamaat Food Drive |
|
For the past few years, Wessex Jamaat has been running an annual food drive during the month of Muharram to raise food for a homeless shelter. Every year seems to bring with it a new record amount of cans collected and indeed this year was no exception. This Muharram, the project led by the youth of the community has once again yielded outstanding results.
On Saturday 9th February 2008, the youth of Wessex Madrasah worked together to stack each and every can that had been collected. Representatives from Mill House Homeless Shelter were invited to receive the donation at Al-Mahdi Centre.
The grand total came to an impressive 1300 cans, all through the generous donations of the members of Wessex Jamaat. The representatives of the shelter showed immense appreciation for the gesture and look forward to many more food drives to come. This opinion I’m sure is echoed throughout the youth of Wessex Jamaat, who put full effort into making this project a success. Mohamedabbas Jaffer, age 17 of Wessex Jamaat said: ‘This food drive has not only achieved in providing food for Mill House Shelter that will no doubt be extremely beneficial to its residents, but it is also a demonstration of the true meaning of Islam as members of the Jamaat worked together in unity to help the wider community.’ |
