Founder of MYH in US to Promote New Book on
Youth-Led Social Change

10/11/2005

LONDON - Founder of Muslim Youth Helpline, Mohammed Mamdani is beginning a book and media tour across the United States today to promote the International Youth Foundation’s new publication, “Our Time is Now: Young People Changing the World.”

The book, to be released on November 16 by the International Youth Foundation, celebrates the lives of 30 young people from across the globe who have created innovative approaches to addressing urgent challenges such as poverty, violence, racism, health and environmental destruction. Each project is the sole source of inspiration of a single young person who decided to change the status-quo in his or her community.

Mamdani represents the United Kingdom's contribution to this book in recognition of his work in re-engaging with British Muslims. Now 22 years old, he set up Muslim Youth Helpline at the age of 18 years from his bedroom with no more than a couple of folders and a single telephone line. The award-winning Charity, now based in North London, operates a 7-day freephone service, and its 60 Helpline Workers have responded to over 10,000 enquiries from young in need since its inception.

Speaking on CNN's American Morning programme, he said, "It is a great honour to have been profiled in this new book. I hope that Muslim Youth Helpline's success will inspire other countries to develop faith and culturally sensitive youth services which support the development of a cohesive Muslim identity and ease the integration of young people into society.

The book is funded by Nokia, the Pearson Foundation and the Sylvan/Laureate Foundation. Proceeds from the sales will be used to fund young social entrepreneurs develop social projects across the world.

Mohammed Mamdani will be meeting with representatives of the American Muslim community, local NGOs and the World Bank to discuss and promote youth engagement policies in the US on Thursday 17 November.
