Since the last COEJ meeting in Jan 2003, The Khawateen Sub-Committee has had various events and activities organised within the Jamaat. I would like to list down a few initiatives made by the Committee since:
The Khawateen Sub Committee organised a meeting with the existing co-ordinators of the committee in April 2003. Ladies sports co-ordinators, Bereavement Support group co-ordinators and Girls camp co-ordinator were invited. 2 new co-ordinators were introduced at this meeting for Positive parenting and Women’s health. The Committee is networking with the HIB sub-committee of the COEJ by having a Khawateen Women’s Health link attending their meetings. The idea is to closely liaise with the existing health awareness body by sharing information, identifying the needs of our women and using current resources and avoiding duplication of programmes. A young professional has been directed to the Khawateen sub committee from the HIB. Fatema Mamdani a qualified Dietician has joined the Khawateen sub committee to promote Healthy Eating in the community. Inshallah her first lecture will take place at the Positive Parenting project on 28th Sept 03 at Hyderi Jamaat, and will cover the pre birth to breast feeding, leading to the weaning process for 0 to 5yrs. The project ‘Healthy Eating’ will be introduced as a pilot project within the Madrasah Inshallah in the Autumn term and is aimed at raising awareness amongst the children about healthy eating through lectures, workshops and questionnaires to the children and the parents. Since the WF/COEJ Graduate Award Ceremony, the Khawateen sub committee has been approached by a young graduate, a Barrister by profession, who showed the willingness to join the Khawateen sub committee as a volunteer. Sabira M Lakha has joined the committee and her current project is to gather information from our youths in relation to their views on marriage and the issues around pre marriage meetings. Sabira has devised a questionnaire and is in the process of liaising with the Jamaats youth committee to promote the questionnaire within the required age group. The Khawateen Sub committee had arranged a telephone conference with the chairladies of all the Jamaats on 16th July 03, to promote awareness of the Khawateen committee and their existing and forthcoming projects, the WF women’s desk and the forth coming Triennial Conference in Dubai. Alhamdullillah we received positive feed-back from this conference. A nominated representative from each Jamaat is also requested to attend the Khawateen meetings to increase effectiveness in networking with the Jamaats. The request from the WF women’s Desk for the committee to provide an Event Co-ordinator for the forth-coming Conference in Dubai has been acknowledged. Sabira M Lakha from Stanmore and Nikhat Panjwani from Essex have been appointed to carry out this task on behalf of the Khawateen committee to provide information from the regional body of COEJ on Marriage related issues required by the WF women’s desk for the WF Conference. The Khawateen sub committee have been actively running their programmes/seminars on Bereavement, ladies sports and the Girls Summer Camp for which an updated report will be presented by the individual co-ordinators at the meeting. The project on Positive Parenting and Women’s Health (Healthy Eating) is to take place in the Autumn term. The Khawateen sub committee is thankful for the support shown by various Jamaats in providing venues, advertising events and physically supporting us by providing volunteers. I would like to extend my special thanks to Milton Keynes Jamaat in providing the venue and their dedicated volunteers for the 8th Ladies Sports Tournament. With Salams Saeeda Jiwa Chairperson Khawateen Sub- Committee COEJ
