Report on 2nd Positive Parenting Seminar E-mail
The 2nd Parenting Seminar was conducted by the Khawateen sub-committee of COEJ on 25th April 2004 at Husaini Islamic Centre Peterborough covering the ages of 7- teen years (16).

The Aims were:

  • To raise awareness to parents (initially mothers) about the challenges that are presented in parenting of today
  • To highlight children’s needs and how to meet them
  • To inform parents of the various approaches towards children
  • To raise awareness with regards to health and safety

Topics

 

included were:

  • Communication  
  • Puberty
  • Raising self esteem 
  • Goals and boundaries
  • Generation gap 
  • Internet chatrooms
  • Peer pressure 
  • Spirituality
  • Identity 

 

 

 

 

 

The programme commenced at 11.30 a.m with 110 participants and ended at 4.00 p.m with provision of lunch, and refreshments throughout the programme. 

The lecturers for this programme were Sis Ummi bai Merali covering the Islamic perspective, Sis Isra Javad  from Muslim Youth Help Line talked of her experience with youths who have called the helpline in distress.
Wendy Clayton and Sue Gallagher from Social Services covering the topic of mediation between parents and children in state of crisis within a relationship.  A question and answers slot was allocated at the end of each session which appeared very interactive and positive.

A positive feedback from the participants was observed through discussion and evaluation forms.

Khawateen sub committee would like to extend their appreciation to  Peterborough Jamaat for hosting the event and contributing towards the catering cost.

Future plans

A series of sessions to be inshallah set up at Stanmore where by various age groups will be covered.  Out side professional speakers will be invited to carry out talks in specific areas and Islamic perspective will be covered inshallah by sis Umi bai Merali.  Khawateen sub-committee is currently in discussion with regards to publishing manuals for Positive Parenting.

Special requests for similar programme have been made by Leicester  and Leeds Jammat especially covering the 0-5 years which was previously held at Hyderi Jammat in Oct 2003.

Interst was also shown by member of California jamaat who requested for information on how to carry out similar programme to cater for their needs.

Information about topics covered in the Seminar was requested by Musqat and Jamaat in India through email.
