Netball, football, badminton, table tennis and swimming were the order of the day when young Muslim women took part in a sporting tournament.
About 200 women, including about 40 from the Peterborough area, competed in a series of games during the 12th Annual European Muslims Women's Sports Tournament held at the Deepings Leisure Centre, in Deeping St James, near Peterborough.
The event was organised by the Women's Desk of the Council of European Jamaats, which aims to strengthen women's self-esteem and self-development.

Saeeda Jiwa, the Women's Desk chairwoman, who lives in Peterborough, said: "The sports tournament is one of a variety of services that the Women's Desk provides in order to support and cater for Muslim women within Europe. "There is great interest from the youths at the tournaments, who really enjoy developing lasting friendships and playing the sports they love. "We make specific effort at the tournaments to reward mature and responsible behaviour among the youths, and encourage good sportsmanship, while asking them to respect and maintain a high level of discipline." |
