Health improvement board (HIB) is a part of the Council of European Jama’ats which is responsible for all projects relating to healthcare in the European communities. This includes projects such as medical screening programs, Hajj medical assistance together with health promotion drives. We are currently re-organising ourselves so that we can provide a more improved services to all European communities. We are also looking to meet the changing demands of modern health care professionals in our community and provide them with a network where they can exchange views and also identify future projects we can embark on. We also wish to update the current list and recognise newly qualified professionals in our communities.

Executive Summary
This report provides an insight into the various special needs that exist within Stanmore Jamaat. This project aims to change not just perceptions of the concept of disability, but to acknowledge and accommodate people with special needs in all the areas of service that Stanmore jamaat provide. The data for this report was obtained by surveying a cross section of the Stanmore Jamaat on 18th March, the wafat of Prophet Mohammed (saw).
This data will be imperative in the foundations for recognizing the characteristics of the population of Stanmore jamaat. Figures indicating the prevalence of the various categories of special needs existent in our community have been identified. Our overwhelming response from the community and our experience indicates the common empathy towards this cause within our jamaat. A large number of people willing to assist and support people with special needs have been identified.

Are you special? Why do we ask? In May 2006 a meeting took place at Hujjat Imambargah Stanmore, that was attended by members from Jamaats in the UK. The objective was to discuss the needs of people with special needs and caregivers and to build on and support the existing work carried out by volunteers in this area. A full report on the findings is available at www.coej.org . Following this a presentation was made at the World Federation Triennial Conference 2006 and a report on the global issue of disability within our communities was published. Delegates received the information well and all recommendations can be found in the report which is available online at www.world-federation.org . A person with special needs is defined in the Disability Discrimination Act as “someone with a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term impact on their ability to carry out day-to-day activities.”
