GCSE Study Skills Course 2000 - Report E-mail

On Sunday the 22 of October during the mid-term school holidays the Education Sub-committee of The Council of European Jamaats organised a study skills course which was held at Sayida Zainab Complex, Birmingham. Children from all over were invited for the nights for the second GCSE study skills course done by the committee.

I myself was a part of the group which was going from Stanmore. Although I didn't want to go my uncle signed me up for the course. I was of the idea that it will be boring and I'll have to study and have that too, in my holiday days, but I discovered through the days that I was wrong.

We recited salaat at Stanmore mosque on Sunday 22 October and after having refreshments and then we had to leave for Birmingham by quarter past two. But because of a mayyat at the mosque we were delayed a bit, but were on our way just after a little while. After reaching Birmingham we were appointed to our rooms.

In the days to come we were to have three lessons of an hour and a half, (with an exception of the last day in which there were only two) a day with breaks in between and time for refreshments and indoor sports. We recited the Zuhar, Asar, Magrib and Isha prayers in the Mosque while the Subuh prayers were held in the complex. Time for sports and board games was also given.

The lecturers for the course included Dr Mahmood Datoo Mr Amir Walji and Mr Ali Akber Hussain. They worked very hard on the lessons and each one of them had a unique style of teaching but all made the lessons lively and interesting which were far from boring normal school lessons.

The lectures covered the topics of time management, stress control, revision guide lines, and guide lines on how to write notes and how to memorise things and also on writing essays. Personally I think that these lectures were beneficial to me and that, they have helped me and will keep o helping me through out my years of studying.

I have to say that the arrangements made at Birmingham was a job well done by the organisers, especially the food and snacks which were available at all times during the day. They also took us to restaurants two times on the first night and on the third night.

The arrangements for sports and extracurricular activities were also exceptionally good with badminton snooker/pool and also table tennis in the list. The teachers were more like friends and played and mingled with us and discussed other things, and their role as teachers was limited to the classrooms. A quiz competition was also held which had two teams a boys and a girls team. The boys team won by a good lead over the girls and took a prize of ten pounds each.

On the whole it was nothing like I thought it would be. I had fun and the lessons were interesting and short and did not go on and on for ever. It was pretty good and I think it was time well spent with friends. It was also a chance to meet other people from other places and to get to know them and my advice to all you out there would be to go to the study skills course as it will also inshaaAllah be held the next year.
