BECOME A PAROLE BOARD MEMBER Operation Black Vote and the Parole Board announce the launch of the brand new Civic Leadership Programme. The Parole Board is seeking to recruit new Board members and in partnership with Operation Black Vote is planning a series of events that will provide a unique opportunity for individuals to learn about the role and responsibilities of the Parole Board and its members.
The aim of the Civic Leadership Programme is to raise awareness about the importance of civic engagement and help increase Black and minority ethnic (BME) representation within the Parole Board, and other public bodies and institutions The programme includes a comprehensive one-day ' Leading Justice ' seminar to be held in July. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of Parole Board work, and knowledge of the application, interview and appointments process. It will inform and seek to inspire Black and ethnic minority individuals to consider applying to become Parole Board members. The Parole Board is an independent body established to protect the public by making risk assessments about prisoners seeking early release. Parole Board members review parole applications to decide who may safely be released into the community and who must remain in custody. Members are highly committed individuals who are fee paid and appointed to serve for an initial 3-year period with a further 3 years on successful review. In 2006/7 over 25,000 cases were considered for review by the Parole Board. Panels include members of the judiciary, forensic psychologists, consultant psychiatrists and Independent members. Independent members do not need specific qualifications, but they should be proficient in analysing and processing large amounts of information. The 'Leading Justice' seminar is free and aimed at individuals who have a serious interest in applying to become Parole Board members. We are looking to attract individuals able to satisfy the core competencies for membership of the Parole Board to attend. These include good analytical skills, sound judgement and decision-making skills; planning and organising ability, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
