Khums is an important pillar of the Islamic economic system and an essential obligation for a Muslim. It was introduced by the grandfather of the Holy Prophet, Abdul Muttalib upon a command given to him by Allah and has been emphasised repeatedly by the Holy Prophet and all the Imams.

The Hilal Advisory Team has ascertained that Saturday, 9 February 2008 was 1st Safar for the Muqallideen of Ayatullah Seestani.

For the Muqallideen of Ayatullah Khui, 1st Safar was on Friday, 8 February 2008.
