Khums is an important pillar of the Islamic economic system and an essential obligation for a Muslim. It is the most common tax in the Shi’ah law of Islam since it applies to the savings and the profits on an annual basis. It was introduced by the grandfather of the Holy Prophet, Abdul Muttalib upon a command given to him by Allah and has been emphasised repeatedly by the Holy Prophet and all the Imams.

Hilal Advisory Team Statement - Rabi al Awwal 1429 AH

The Astronomical New Moon is on Friday, 7 March 2008 at 5.15pm. The moon will not be visible anywhere in the world on this day.

Based on our community sighting criteria, the first sighting of the crescent should Insha'allah occur in Central Asia on Saturday, 8 March 2008.

Should the crescent be sighted as expected, 1st of Rabi -ul- Awwal will be on Sunday, 9 March 2008 for the Muqallideen of Ayatullah Seestani and the Muqallideen of Marhum Ayatullah Khui.

The Hilal Advisory Team will ascertain the sighting as soon as possible.
