 Real people. Real concerns. Real change. This was no clandestine meeting of political bigwigs. Nor was it a token five minute mosque visit by all-smiling, all-nodding politicians. In the first event of its kind - mainstream politicians and ordinary members of our community were brought together for an open, frank and lively discussion.
In preparation for the upcoming British General Election, on Saturday 27th March, at the Mehfil e Abbas centre in Birmingham - the CoEJ Media and External Relations Desk brought together three politicians from the main British political parties and ordinary people from our community. Anyone could join the audience. And anyone could ask a question on anything.
The result? Real people expressing real concerns passionately and making way for real change. For an hour and a half members from our community were able to engage with the people seeking their votes and find out what they really stand for. The panellists represented all three of the major British political parties; Jo Barker (Conservative Parliamentary Candidate), John Hemming (Liberal Democrat MP) and Valarie Vaz (Labour Parliamentary Candidate).

Abstract
The Conservative Muslim Forum (CMF) will discuss and debate what a Conservative government will mean for the British Muslim community. This involves discussing wider issues which affect all communities such as the economy and youth crime but in particular issues that the British Muslim community find themselves more concerned with such as immigration, multiculturalism, faith schools, discrimination, anti-terrorist legislation and the Prevent strategy - to name a few. Questions to be tackled include but are not restricted to: How will the government engage with the British Muslim community? What will it expect of British Muslims? What will change and how?

The Three Faiths Forum is offering the opportunity for second year students of Muslim, Christian & Jewish backgrounds to be mentored by prominent MPs and Peers. As part of this year-long programme, students will get to develop their own ‘empowerment project’ with the support of leading NGOs and think tanks.

"The media is to blame."
"The media is negative to Muslims."
"We need Muslims in the media."
Sound Familiar? These slogans are often bandied about in our community. But what do they actually mean? And how should we as Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Muslims go about engaging with "the media" and showcase the positive contribution we make to our societies ?
The Council of European Jamaats has organised a media training course for all community members on 19th - 21st June.
The course will focus on how to engage with wider communities, how to write, speak and interview better. The course will highlight ways of how to get publicity for the good work you are already doing. You can get more information and apply online at www.coej.org or by emailing
