ImageShafana Jessa was born in Northwick Park Hospital in 1983. She has spent most of her life in Dar es Salaam Tanzania, where her Father Shiraz Jessa

 was born. Her mother, Marzia Jessa is from Uganda. Shafana has two sisters, one younger and one older than her. She married Sadiq Datoo in July 2007.

Shafana completed her schooling at the International School of Tanganyika (IST), where she did her IGCSEs and her International Baccalaureate.  She then moved to London to attend university.

She attended Barts and the London, Queen Mary's school of Medicine and Dentistry, to complete a bachelor's in dental surgery.  Shafana has completed her Vocational Training and is now working as a dentist in Walthamstow.
 
Throughout her life, Shafana has been taking part in community activities and organising events. She was involved in the first youth group of the Dar es Salaam Jamat – YAS (Youth at Service). She has also given career talks to youth in schools and mosque in Tanzania.

In the past she has done a lot of volunteer work which included visiting cancer patients in a cancer hospital once a week, teaching disabled children how to swim and she currently teaches at Hujjat Saturday Workshop in Stanmore. Shafana has also been editor of her school yearbook and founded her school's first ever girls cricket team.

She enjoys reading, playing basketball and badminton. She enjoys most sports even though she may not be able to play very well, she is always eager to learn.
