Home Boards And Desks ICA Project Enlightenment This Week Marks the Death Anniversary of Janabe Fatema (a.s.) - Life & Times of this Great Lady

fatimaa_ASIt is narrated that
Al-Kauthar in the Holy Quran means Hazrat Fatima Zahra (A.S.)

“In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Verily We have given you (O Muhammad) Kauthar.
So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice.
Verily it is your enemy whose line (progeny) shall be cut off”.
(108: 1-3)

Purpose of Revelation

History narrates that one day ‘Aas bin Wael, who was one of the leaders of the Mushrikeen of Makkah saw the Holy Prophet (saww) coming out of Masjidul-Haraam.  He stopped and conversed with him for some while.  Meanwhile, some other elders of Mushrikeen who were inside the mosque, were observing this.  When the conversation was over and ‘Aas came inside the mosque, the group asked, “O ‘Aas! Whom were you chatting to?”  He responded by saying, “With that person who is Abtar”.

Abtar means  “Tail-less” – a person whose progeny has been cut off.  According to one narration, the Holy prophet (saww) had two sons from Janabe Khadeeja (as), namely Qasim and Tahir.  Since both of them had died, leaving the prophet without any sons, the pagan Arabs started calling the prophet (saw) Abtar.  As a consolation to the Prophet (saw), Surah al-Kauthar was revealed. There are several meanings of al-Kauthar:

Meaning of Al-Kauthar

It is recorded in our books as well as some of the books of Ahle Sunnah, like al-Bukhari, al-Muslim and Musnad of Ahmed ibn Hanbal that the Holy Prophet (saww) said: “Kauthar is a stream of super excellence exclusively belonging to me.  Only the righteous believers (among my followers) will be allowed to drink from it.  Ali (as) will distribute water from it to them.  On the day of Judgement, I will see some of my companions driven away from Kauthar.  It will be announced that they are those, who after my departure from the world, deviated from the true religion and introduced innovations to corrupt the faith”.  From that day onwards, Ali (as) became known as Saaqi-e-Kauthar meaning one who quenches the thirst of believers from the stream of Kauthar.

Kauthar also means Kheire-katheer “Bounties in abundance”.  Allah (SWT) bestowed the Holy Prophet (saww) plenty of bounties such as prophethood, Holy Quran, some of the best companions, success in battles, acceptance and entrance of people into the fold of Islam in large numbers etc.

However, many Shia scholars are of the opinion that because in the last verse of this Surah, Allah (SWT) says, “Verily it is your enemy whose progeny shall be cut off” this by itself proves that Kauthar is also in reference to the most beloved daughter of the Messenger of Allah, Seyyida Fatimah az-Zahra (as) through whom Allah (SWT) gave His beloved prophet (saw) abundance of descendants.
It is narrated that
Al-Kauthar in the Holy Quran means Hadrat Fatima Zahra (A.S.)

“In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Verily We have given you (O Muhammad) Kauthar.
So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice.
Verily it is your enemy whose line (progeny) shall be cut off”
. (108: 1-3)

Female Born are Blessings

Before Islam, giving birth to a female child was considered as source of disgrace and burden.  Al-Qur'an mentions this very graphically - “And when anyone of them is given the news of a daughter, his face turns black, he is filled with anger.  And he hides himself from the people because of the evil of the news given to him (wondering) should he keep her with disgrace, or bury her (alive) in the dust.  Behold! (how) evil is what they judge”.  (16:58-59).

Many Arabs opted to bury their female child to save themselves from disgrace:  “And when the girl (buried alive) is asked; For what sin was she put to death”. (81:8-9).   Whereas the Arabs used to hanker for male offspring, whom they believed ensured continuity of their progeny.   The Holy Prophet (saww) said: “Blessed is that woman who first gives birth to a daughter and then to a son”.  He (saww) also said: “Grace descend over the person’s house where there are daughters.  Heavenly blessings are showered on that house and angels visit that house for a glimpse”.

A man was sitting with the Holy Prophet (saww) when someone came and told him, “A daughter has been born to you”.  There was a visible sign of dislike on his face, so the Holy Prophet (saww) said,  “The earth bears her, the heavens shade her and the Almighty gives her food. For you, she is like a flower, smell her fragrance”.

Treatment of Fatimah(A.S.)

The Holy Prophet (saww) accorded his daughter with highest respect and always showered her with love and kindness.  Whenever, she came in his presence, the Holy Prophet (saww) stood up in her respect.  He (saww) called her Umme Abeehaa meaning “The mother of her father”.  He (saww) also said: “Fatimah is part of me, whoever offends her has offended me”.

Even after Fatimah (as) was married to Ali (as), the Holy Prophet (saww) continued showing love to her and her family.  He (saww) would frequently visit her and it was his tendency that whenever he went on a journey, he would first bid farewell to his wives and then come to the house of his beloved daughter from where he would begin his travel.  On return, he would first come to greet Fatimah (as) and then go to others.

Haroon ar-Rasheed once asked Imam Musa al-Kadhim (as),  “Why do you call yourselves as descendants of the Holy Prophet (saw) when you are actually the descendants of Ali (as)?  Men are traced to their fathers and the Holy Prophet (saww) was your maternal grandfather?”  Imam (as) replied: “In Quran, Allah (SWT) says: and among his progeny (are) Dawood, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa and Haroon.  Thus We reward those who do good.  And Zakariyyah, Yahya, Issa and Ilyaas…Who is Issa’s father? He is considered among the prophet’s offspring through Maryam.  Likewise, we are the offspring of the Holy Prophet (saww) through our mother Fatimah (as)”.
Ahlul Bayt (as) are mentioned in Al-Qur'an in many verses
Here we look at a verse which mention our Lady Fatimah (as)

The verse of feeding

This is: 'And they give away food, out of love for Him, to the poor and the orphan and the captive. We feed you only for Allah swt's sake, we intend not of you any recompense, nor thanks! Verily, we dread from our Lord, a stern day of distress.  So will God guard them from the evil of that day and cause them to meet freshness and pleasure.  And shall recompense them, for what they endured with patience, with garden and silk.' (Qur'an 76:8-12).

Commentators, from different Muslim sects, narrate that these honourable verses referred to Ali (as), Fatimah (as), al-Hasan (as) and al-Husain (as). In al-Kashshaf, it is narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that 'al-Hasan (as) and al-Husain (as) got ill and were visited by the Messenger of Allah.  He said: O Abul Hasan! Why not make a vow for the recovery of your sons?  So Ali (as) and Fatimah (as) vowed that if they (their sons) became well, they would fast for three days for the pleasure of Allah swt.  Al-Hasan (as) and al-Husain (as) also fasted.  Janabe Fizzah also accompanied them.

They became completely well, so Ali (as) borrowed from Simon, the Khaybarian Jew, three measures of barley.  Fatimah (as) grinded one amount and baked five bread discs for the five of them.  When they took it in their hands to break the fast, a beggar came and said: Assalamu Alaikum Ahla Bayti Muhammad (Peace be upon you, O progeny of Muhammad) - I am a needy from among the Muslims, feed me, and may Allah swt feed you from the banquets of Paradise! They favoured him and spent their night without taking anything but water, and fasted in the morning.  When the evening came and they took the food in their hands, an orphan came and they favoured him; a captive came in the third night and they did likewise.

In the morning, Ali (as) took al-Hasan (as) and al-Husain (as) to the Messenger of Allah (sww), who, when saw them trembling from great hunger, said: How hard it is for me the state which I see you in; and he left with them and went to Fatimah (as) who was in her prayers.  Our Prophet (swww) was saddened. Gabriel came down and said: "O Muhammad! Allah congratulates you with your progeny", and he recited the above verse.

This is the secret of Ahlul Bayt (as): they move in all their activities in life for the sake of Allah swt, without asking or requesting recompense or gratitude.  This is a great humanistic virtue: a person should give whatever he can to whoever needs it, without expecting any repayment or recompense, but waiting only for the mercy of Allah swt. This is the value of Ahlul Bayt (as), and amongst them our Lady Fatimah (as): they have lived the spirit of donation and giving - in their knowledge, social position, strength, soul and blood - everything is for the sake of Allah swt and in His way.   From - Fatimah al-Ma`sumah (as): a role model for men and women.

Jaan-e-Nabi wa Khasaye Dawar  hai Fatima,
kuch shak nahi shafia-e-mehshar hai Fatima
Sibtaian-e-Zeevakhar ki maadar hai Fatima
Afsoos aaj bekaso bepar hai Fatima
Jannat me chain hoyega kyon kar Rasool ko
Thuda hai najdiyoun ne Mazare Batool Ko

THE FINAL GOODBYE

The Prophet (swww) has said: “The satisfaction and anger of Fatimah causes the satisfaction and anger of Allah swt.”  According to this narration, surely Allah (SWT) is definitely angry with those persons whom Hadrat Fatimah (as) is angry with.  On that fateful day, Amir al-Mu’minin (as)  felt that his wife wanted to have a private conversation with him.  He asked the other women who were in the room to leave. Then he sat beside Zahra’s (as) bed and said:  “Dear Fatimah! Tell me; tell me whatever is in your heart.”

Janabe Fatimah (as) said: “My dear cousin! I am departing from this world.  I saw my father in my dream.  He told me:  ‘Come to me my daughter;  I am eager to meet you."  "Ya Ali,  during all the period that I was with you, have I ever disobeyed any of your requests?” (In other words, forgive me if I have done you any wrong.)  Upon hearing these words Amir al-Mu’minin (as) became even more grieved and began to cry.  He said:  “We seek refuge in Allah; you were much greater than to have disobeyed.”

She then said: “My children are young and will soon lose their mother. Every man also needs a wife.  So after me it is my request that you re-marry to someone who is kind  to my children.”

Then she continued:  “Ya Ali, my last Will is to prepare my funeral at night; I do not want any of those who oppressed me to know about my funeral. I want you to wash me at night, put the shroud on me, perform the prayer upon my body, and bury me at night.  And after my burial, sit beside my grave and recite Quran for me.”   And in those moments her soul left her holy body; her departure from this world turned off the lights in Imam Ali’s (A.S.) home.

Amir al-Mu’minin (as) slowly put her head on the pillow.  The children, now without a mother, came in and threw themselves on their mother’s body.  Hassan (as)  had fallen on his mother’s chest; he would kiss and say:  “O Mother! It is me Hassan, talk to me.”   Hussain (as) came and sat at the end of her feet.  He hugged and kissed them and said:  “O Mother! I am your Hussain, talk to me; my soul is about to separate from my body.”

The sounds of wailing and crying could be heard from the house of Amir al-Mu’minin (as).   It was the first couple of hours after dusk.   People of Medina knew about the illness of Hadrat Fatimah (as) and hence were expecting her demise. The sound of moaning and crying went from one house to another until the whole town turned into a mourning ceremony.   As the narrator Qummi says:

“The people of Medina all moaned at once; it was so loud that you would think the town is about to collapse"

Bibi Fatima's Will to Imam Ali (A.S.)

Janabe Fatima (A.S.) said:
"May Allah reward you with the best of goodness. Ya Ali, firstly I ask you to marry after my death, my niece Umamah;
surely she will be to my children as I was. Besides, men cannot do without women."

Fatima (A.S.) then added:
"I ask you not to let anyone who did injustice to me to witness my funeral, for they certainly are enemies of mine,
and the enemy of Allah's Messenger. Also don't give them the chance to pray over me, nor to any of their followers.
Burry me at night when eyes are rested and sight is put to sleep."

A QUIET FUNERAL

In the darkness of the jet black night, when eyes were asleep and voices were silent, a Heavenly procession left Ali's house
while carrying the Messenger of Allah's daughter to her final abode.
This was on the night of the third (3rd) of Jamadi Al Thani (the second), 11 A.H.

The heartbreaking procession moved towards an unknown location followed by a small number of devoted ones...
They were Ali, Hassan, Hussain, Zainab and Um Kulthum... Abu Dhar, Ammar, Miqdad, and Salman were following them.

Where are the thousands who inhabited Medina?! One asks, and the answer came: Fatima (A.S.) requested that they may not be present at her funeral!!

Subbat alayna masaibun law annaha subbat alal ayyami sirna layaliya

Lowering Janabe Fatima (A.S.) into the grave, Imam Ali (A.S.) speaks to the Prophet (PBUH)

"O Prophet of Allah, peace be upon you from me and from your daughter who has come to you and who has hastened to meet you.
O Prophet of Allah ! my patience about your chosen (daughter) has been exhausted and my power of endurance has weakened,
except that I have ground for consolation in having endured the great hardship and heart rending event of your separation.
I laid you down in your grave while your last breath had passed (when your head)
`Verily we are Allah's and verily unto Him shall we return.' (2:56) …between my neck and chest.”

Now the trust has been returned and what had been given has been taken back.
My grief knows no bounds, and my nights will remain sleepless till Allah chooses for me the house in which you are now residing.
Certainly your daughter would apprise you of the joining together of your Ummah (people) for oppressing her.
You ask her in detail and get all the news about the position. This happened when a long time had not elapsed and your remembrance had not disappeared.
My salaam be on you both, the salaam of a grief stricken not of a disgusted or a hateful person;
for if I go away, it is not because I am weary (of you); and if I stay, it is not due to lack of belief in what Allah has promised the endurers."

Failing Attempts

At sunrise people gathered to participate in Fatima's funeral, but they were informed that the
darling of Allah's Messenger (S) had been secretly buried during the night.

Meanwhile, Ali (A) made the shapes of four fresh graves in Baqi' so as to conceal the location where Fatima was buried.
When the people entered the graveyard, they were confused as to which spot was actually Lady Fatima Zahra's grave;
the people turned towards each other and with feelings of guilt said:

"Our Prophet (S) has not left behind but one daughter, yet she has died and was buried without our participation in the funeral or the prayer rituals.
We do not even realize the place where she has been buried.”
Noticing that a revolt might be ignited because of the emotional atmosphere this event created, the governing party announced:
"Select a group of Muslim women and ask them to dig these graves so that we may find Fatima (A) and perform prayers on her."

Ali Ibn Abu Talib (A.S.) levelling his sword said:
If anyone moves even a mere stone from these graves, I shall strike even the "back of the last follower of the unjust."

People who realized Ali's seriousness, took his threats with complete belief that he would do just as he said if anyone were to oppose him.
Thus, until this day, the location of Fatima's grave remains a secret.
