Home Boards And Desks Health Health Advice Guidance for diabetic patients in Ramadhan

This is a brief guidance for diabetic patients to aid them in deciding whether they should fast in the holy month of Ramadhan and if so, what adjustments to make to their medication. There is a comprehensive guidance form the department of Health which can be found on the COEJ website for others.


Please note that this article is to be used as a guide to discuss the matter with your GP/Diabetic nurse but follow their advice.

 

Who should not FAST

 

  • Type 1
  • If you had severe Hypo previously
  • Ketoacidosis previously
  • Poor Glycaemic control (>10%)
  • Complications- Kidneys problems
  • Pregnant
  • Acute illness

 

 

Adjusting Medication

 

  • Metformin, Glitazones & Repaglinide ( No change)
  • Gliclazide – No change to evening dose
  •                  (reduce morning dose by half)
  • Glibenclamide-- Change to Gliclaside
  • Glimepride -- Take in evening

 

 

Testing During Ramadan

 

  • Metfromin & Glitazone – No testing
  • Gliclazide /Glimepride – need meter.
    (Test if symptoms of hypo’s.)

 

 

When FAST must END

 

  • Hypo ( <3.5mmol)
  • BG <3.9mmols within few hours of fast
  • BG more than 16mmols.
