Mentor Profile - Shabana Walji
Shabana was born to Amir and Hasina Walji in 1990, Peterborough. The elder of two daughters, she completed her GCSEs and A Levels at Jack Hunt School.
During her time there, she played an active part in her community and took on roles such as counsellor and mentor, enabling her to tackle individual issues sensitively and effectively. Shabana also acted as a Form and Year Representative, as well as a Peterborough Youth Council Representative, which mainly involved her voicing student opinions to the body, allowing her to further her leadership skills in the process.
At present, she has completed her first year of Pharmacy at De Montfort University, Leicester. Shabana is currently a PMB Rep, the representative for the Pharmacy board at her university.
She takes pleasure in carrying out voluntary work, having previously assisted in teaching Quran to youths at her madrassah; she also recently attended a revision course held in York as a mentor. Her passion for recitation means that she frequently participates in qasida and Quran recitation programmes.
She is also an avid reader and writer, and her love for language resulted in her taking up Japanese during her first years of secondary education, which she plans on continuing in the near future. She occasionally plays badminton and tennis and enjoys rowing.
Of the upcoming camp, she says that hopes to be able to motivate and inspire the youths in discovering and learning more about Islam, and is hugely thankful to have been given the opportunity to be able to work with these youngsters.
