Mentor Profile - Arif Damani
Arif was born in Harold Wood, Essex, in 1989, but in 1996 the family moved and settled in Northwood, North-West London. His father Minazali, an ever present nawha and marthiya recitor at Stanmore mosque, and mother Anisha were born in Uganda but had to flee the country due to the expulsion decreed by Idi Amin, both of them eventually finding themselves in the UK. Arif is also fortunate to have a younger brother, Sadiq.
After attending school locally, Arif’s educational career took him to Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham. Here he attained 11 GCSE’s and A-levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and French as well as an AS-level in Further Maths. Whilst at the school he was part of the Student Council throughout the GCSE years and served as prefect in 6th form. Finishing secondary school has lead Arif to the challenge of university where he is so fortunate, Alhamdulillah, to have just finished his second year of Medicine at King’s College London. He has sat on the student-staff liaison committee for these two years, and over the past year has been a member of the subcommittee of the university’s Ahlul Bayt Society. InshAllah in the upcoming academic year, Arif will be taking a break from medicine to pursue a BSc in Physiology and hopefully take up the role of Events Organiser for the Ahlul Bayt Society.
His interests spread far and wide from the fictional realms of books to the programmed world of video games to the big screen of film and finally ending with his passion for sport, especially football & Manchester United and Badminton.
Arif was a teacher at the Hujjat Saturday Workshop for three years mainly teaching in Qur’an recitation to a wide range of skill groups. Currently he is a member of the Stanmore Jafferys helping out wherever possible; whether it be manning the various relief/charity stalls, chairing seminars or facilitating events such as the Ramadan sleepover.
For COEJ, Arif has recently come back from mentoring the GCSE/AS/A2 revision course in York this Easter and last year also mentored at the COEJ Fresher’s Fair. The Sweden Camp holds a dear place in his heart after having been a camper in 2005 and coming back as a mentor in 2008. Hopefully this hat-trick of appearances will prove to be the most exciting and challenging of them all
