The MCB along with affiliate organisations and civil rights groups will be lobbying MPs in Parliament on Wednesday 9th November on the proposals contained in the new anti-terror bill. The bill's report is to be debated in Parliament on Wednesday. The bill includes moves to:
- hold suspects for 90 days without charge
- allow the Government to ban non-violent groups advocating political dissent
- circumscribe the freedom to resist dictatorships and authoritarian governments worldwide on the premise of 'glorifying' terrorism
- cast peace protestors as terrorists
The bill has huge implications for the Muslim community, many of whom already suffer from disproportionate targetting by the security services. Laws permitting detention without trial after 9/11 saw hundreds of Muslims arrested and detained only to be subsequently released without charge. This new bill will have similar catastrophic effects on the Muslim community and its relations with wider British society. It is imperative that you come and support this endeavour to resist further attempts to diminish our civil rights. It is Muslims that will be the greater casualty should this bill make it onto the Statute books. A public meeting will take place after lobbying of Parliament (1.00pm - 6.00pm), on Wednesday 9 November 2005 Time: 6.30pm - 8.30pm Venue: Grand Committee Room, House of Commons, London SW1A (entrance via St Stephen's gate)
