Khums is an important pillar of the Islamic economic system and an essential obligation for a Muslim. It is the most common tax in the Shi’ah law of Islam since it applies to the savings and the profits on an annual basis. It was introduced by the grandfather of the Holy Prophet, Abdul Muttalib upon a command given to him by Allah and has been emphasised repeatedly by the Holy Prophet and all the Imams.

Assalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

All praise is due to Allah Almighty who has graced us with another Ramadan. We thank Him and send our choicest greetings of peace upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

As we intensify our acts of worship during this blessed month with fasting, prayers, charity and sweet akhlaq it is of vital importance that we also increase our collective efforts to promote understanding, unity and justice both at home and abroad.

Toward this end, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) in partnership with the Greater London Authority, Liberty, Human Rights organization and other community-based bodies are holding a lobby in the House of Commons on 12 October from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. Although it is in the month of Ramadan but I think you will agree with me that it is vital for Muslims to make this event a success. I call upon you to not only attend this event but also encourage others to do so. May Allah (SWT) shower His blessings on us and ease our difficulties
