On November 16, 2007 The World Federation was saddened to learn of the shocking impact of Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh. The World Federation immediately contacted its agency there to find out the effect it had on our brothers and sisters as well as the extent of the damages. Our initial assessment indicated that members of our community were not directly affected. Nevertheless the devestation has regrettably been wide scale.
With winds of up to 240 km/h and tidal surges reaching several meters high this storm devastated the southern coast of the country – impacting one million families. At least 2,000 people are missing and over 3,500 are confirmed dead with the death toll expected to rise. With power lines down, bridges and roadways damaged and essential crops wiped out from over 900,000 acres of land, the coastline has turned into a web of waterways and sandbanks. |
