Annual Ladies Sports Tournament Report 2004 E-mail

Birmingham Jamaat hosted the 9th Annual Ladies Sports Tournament on 24th and 25th July 2004. Participants from all over the UK enjoyed a weekend of fun and competition taking part in Netball, Football, Badminton, Table Tennis, Swimming and 5 A-side Football. Girls as young as 8 spent 2 days competing, making new friends and enjoying themselves at the King Edwards High School for Girls Sports Centre in Edgbaston and at the Community Hall facilities at the National Indoor Arena. Although competition levels were of a high standard, the atmosphere at both centres was happy and relaxed, with participants giving their best on the courts and sharing their experiences and enjoying each others company off the courts.

Day 1 saw the organisers struggling with the timing, as the Opening had to be delayed due to a coach breaking down which resulted in participants arriving very late. However, lost time was quickly regained due to quick decisions of the umpires and organisers. The Netball tournament was run by a strong team of 8 umpires who made sure that absolutely all of the 19 teams participating had fun in the matches. The overall umpire, Chris Flaherty who is one of the top Netball coaches in Birmingham, commended upon attitudes and behaviour of the girls throughout the tournament. Birmingham’s hospitality was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the extra fun swimming sessions were greatly appreciated by the younger girls as well as accompanying mothers.

The Presentation Ceremony was greatly enjoyed by all with teams cheering each other on their achievements. A few members of the senior citizens group were invited to present the girls and ladies with their awards.

The Khawateen Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to Birmingham Jamaat for hosting the event and a special thanks to all the organisers who looked after some many young ladies during the weekend, which  truly reflected the sense of belonging and unity amongst our Jamaats in the UK.
