Freshers Fair 2007 Report |
|
The Freshers Fair 2007 organised by the Education Committee of CoEJ formed part of the CoEJ Careers Day on 8th September. It was an exciting day that I looked forward to going to.
The programme was split into two sections. During the morning session we had three talks delivered by undergraduates and graduates. These talks were entitled “First year uni experiences”, “Spirituality at University” and “Freshers Week”. All these talks were great and the spirituality talk was especially useful as it gave an indication, and first hand experience, at how University can change ones life.
After the talks we were then split off into small discussion groups where we met freshers who were going to either the same university as us or universities nearby. We had a current undergraduate guiding us through some practical problems that we may face at Uni. This session was also useful as it gave us the opportunity to interact with fellow freshers and also discuss potential issues. After Salaah and lunch which was together with participants from the other careers day events we went off to the Sayyeda Zainab (A.S.) building where we were split into groups and had 3 45 minute workshops. The workshops were entitled “Money Management”, “Knowing yourself at Uni” and “Using Time effectively at Uni”. These workshops were delivered by excellent speakers. One quote that I remember vividly from the time workshop was: ‘Time flies but you are the pilot’ As Imam Ali (a.s) has said, “opportunities are like passing clouds, what has gone will not come back, what is to come in the future we do not know, so get up and make the most of now”. During the self-understanding workshop we learnt about how to portray ourselves and also about our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energies present within all of us. A very beneficial thing I learnt was that we have four looks. If we look back we thank Allah(s.aw). if we look forward we trust Allah(s.aw)., if we look around we serve Allah(s.aw)., if we look within we will find spirituality within us. One thing I’d really like to share is that Allah(s.w.t). has a unique way of introducing us to changes in our life situation so as to grow and come more closer to him because if we didn’t we would all stagnate . University is one of these changes or shifts from a good easy life to something more difficult, more challenging. But with every raise comes a price and to be able to rise higher we have to go through these difficult times so that we can succeed and climb higher up the ladder, Inshallah. This day has really given me a lot of advise and ammunition to be able to deal with all the situations I will face at University and inshAllah we will all be able to raise to higher stations.
