Bangladesh Cyclone: WF Investigates Aid Requirements for Victims of Cyclone Sidr E-mail
On November 16, 2007 The World Federation was saddened to learn of the shocking impact of Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh. The World Federation immediately contacted its agency there to find out the effect it had on our brothers and sisters as well as the extent of the damages. Our initial assessment indicated that members of our community were not directly affected. Nevertheless the devestation has regrettably been wide scale.

With winds of up to 240 km/h and tidal surges reaching several meters high this storm devastated the southern coast of the country – impacting one million families. At least 2,000 people are missing and over 3,500 are confirmed dead with the death toll expected to rise.  With power lines down, bridges and roadways damaged and essential crops wiped out from over 900,000 acres of land, the coastline has turned into a web of waterways and sandbanks. Whilst immediate aid is reaching the victims of this disaster, The World Federation has requested its agency in Bangladesh to develop a comprehensive needs assessment to determine where The World Federation can add value.

Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries of the world. Year after year, the country is hit by cyclones, floods droughts, tsunamis and tidal surges. The same coastline that was struck by Cyclone Sidr was also the same area that was affected by the December 2004 tsunami.  Let us pray for all of the lives that were lost, the people that are displaced and the livelihoods destroyed by the cyclone.
